As the popularity of E-Sports
increases so must the professionalism that is displayed on mainstream markets. Therefore, there is one rule that needs to become mandatory for
casters/hosts covering tournaments or events where there are financial
implications:
I started watching Twitch earlier this year and since then I’ve
seen many tournaments and events covering a wide range of games. I would like
to applaud the efforts that these crews have made to make these broadcasts successful
and showcase E-Sports. Unfortunately I have one critique: I’m not seeing enough
full suits. I routinely see dress shirts with the top button undone and a dress
jacket and while this is nice, in my opinion this does not go far enough; especially
when the unbuttoned shirt reveals a large foliage of chest hair (GROSS).
However I’ve also seen jerseys, hats and other questionable attire worn by the
casters/hosts that thwart the appearance of professionalism. I understand that
E-Sports is comprised of a unique group of individuals, ones who have a larger
level of understanding. However, if we look really hard at ourselves it isn’t
just about us and our scene. It is about the global perception of our scene. If
we as E-Sports enthusiast want the scene to continue to grow we need to take it
to the next level. The model that is in
front of us is the sports scene and if you look at all the shows on TV, suits
are mandatory. It would be wise to follow that example as it has broken boundaries
and proven to be successful.
But Why?
Some of the coolest pictures I’ve seen this year are public
venues (like bars, restaurants, etc) airing E-Sports tournaments and events.
I think a goal for E-Sports is for this to happen all over
the world. Please ask yourself this question: When are suits most commonly
worn? The first thing that came to my mind was a job interview. Why? What does
the suit convey? It conveys that you are very serious about the opportunity or
impression that you are preparing to make. If you ask me, every time E-Sports
is aired in a public venue and a patron of that venue is getting their first
look at E-Sports, the patron is essentially interviewing the content. A suit
immediately tells a viewer that this is a big deal and hopefully grabs the
viewer’s attention. As a community, E-Sports needs to be continually adding to
its numbers. The larger the community the more opportunities there will be for
all the people involved in the scene. So here is the rule of thumb I hope to
see followed:
If the tournament/event
has financial implications, casters and hosts should be dressed in suits (or
suit equivalent).
Barney Stinson suits up and so should you!
